Tuberculosis the resurgent killer, ranks first in mortality among all infectious diseases. In addition, the increased reports of `multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis' (MDR-TB) among the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive patients have worsen the situation. Therefore, early detection of rifampicin resistance by various methods plays a pivotal role in the management and control of MDR-TB. This article reviews the information available in this area of research.
