Abstract: This paper attempts to summarise latest development in causal inference and highlight the transition of conventional statistical analysis to causal analysis. Review the assumptions that forms the basis of all causal inferences, the jargons used in devising these assumptions, the conditional character of all causal and counterfactual claims, and the techniques that have been developed for the evaluation of such claim. Pearl (2000a) illustrated using a general theory of causation based on the Structural Causal Model (SCM), by unifying other approaches to causation, and provided a coherent mathematical foundation for the analysis of causes and counterfactuals. We review the formal and conceptual relationships between the structural and potential-outcome frameworks.

Keywords: Confounding, counterfactuals, causal effects, potential-outcome, causes of effects, structural equation models
