Abstract: Background: Tuberculosis is a major community health problem in India and the burden is increasing steadily. Regular treatment and proper health care of these patients play a key role in disease control. Tuberculosis Research Center, Chennai, of the Indian Council of Medical Research, is one of the research institutes in Tamil Nadu that has been associated with both education and training of nursing staff on hospital and community based tuberculosis services for nearly five decades.

Objectives: To educate and train the nursing students and staff on hospital and community based tuberculosis services with a practice-based teaching model.

Methods: Nursing students and qualified field staff are trained on the various procedures related to the patient flow and care of tuberculosis patients. The training tools include patient interviews, direct patient demonstrations for diagnostic, treatment, monitoring and recording services, lectures, audio-visual aids, group discussions, role play and field trips for health education sessions.

Conclusions: Practice-based training on tuberculosis improves the communication, learning and competent nursing care skills of the nursing students and staff for both hospital and community services.
