Introduction
Model Rural Health Research Unit (MRHRU) at Thoppur, Madurai, was sanctioned in March 2024 by Government of India, Department of health research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to be under the mentorship of ICMR-NIRT and linked Medical college being Madurai Medical College. The primary focus of MRHRU, Madurai is to enhance the quality of health research and improve the health of the local population and creating infrastructure for transfer of technology importantly to, the rural level for improving quality of health services to population.

Research Project proposals on priority Health topics, locally relevant, developed by faculties of State side [Madurai Medical College and Directorate of Public Health(DPH), Tamil Nadu], reviewed and approved by Local Research Advisory Committee with eminent experts constituted for the purpose are being conducted. Each proposal is designed to include DPH side investigators so that not only the study goes smoothly at field level but also could end up in policy changes based on the Research study findings.

Population based Health Survey in MRHRUs is a centrally driven survey, to assess health status and annual trend of change in health status of communities residing in the field practice areas of MRHRUs across India, in MRHRU Madurai it is Valayankulum block
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) among postpartum mothers:
Newer follow up strategy for delivered GDM mothers to improve case detection of Type II Diabetes Mellitus -An Implementation Research in rural areas of Madurai district.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among Sakkimangalam village population:
A Comprehensive Health Survey among adults of Sakkimangalam village of Madurai District of Tamil Nadu with special focus on Kidney Disease.
Nutritional Status of Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM):
A study to assess the long-term nutritional status of SAM children and to evaluate the sustainability at specified intervals post-discharge to prevent morbidity/complications in children with malnutrition.

Proposed land of 22500 square feet of State Health Department has been identified, land transfer procedures underway after which construction of MRHRU building in Thoppur, Madurai will be done. Temporary Room space provided from the state health department in Government Hospital Thoracic Medicine, Thoppur Madurai for research activities and a room at Madurai Medical College for office work.

Trained Anganwadi health care workers in the field of nutrition health through investigator of the Malnutrition study of MRHRU as a part of SNSP program.
Research Capacity strengthening of faculties of Medical College: Two days Research Methodology workshop was conducted through MRHRU Madurai.
MRHRU Madurai provided funding for Faculties of Madurai Medical College and NIRT Scientists for attending workshops in Salem (Clinical Trial) and Vishakhapatnam (Manuscript Writing & Data Analysis) as per directions by DHR.
